Why is it that we sometimes try so hard yet never seem to get anywhere? When things just don’t seem to go our way and everything is wrong?

Last week I wrote about the importance of shifting your focus and energy, but sometimes it takes more than ‘just’ a happy song or walks in nature to shake things off.

That’s why this week I’m diving into the transformational work of affirmations.

You probably already know a fair bit about the importance of creating positive statements. But did you know that they are also scientifically proven to work on changing your perception of the world and your life for the better?

The term often associated with using affirmations is neuroplasticity It basically means that your brain has the capacity to change and that even old habits and negative thought patterns can be shifted.

Through brain scans, scientists can see how the ‘happiness’ center of the brain can be trained and stimulated through regular meditation practice. And affirmations are proven to work in a similar way as they fire up the neurological pathways that help you feel more positive.

How does it work?

In short, each day we have between 60-80.000 thoughts – the majority of those happen on autopilot and without much conscious awareness. Less than 5% of thoughts are actually new, meaning more than 95% of your thoughts are re-runs from yesterday and the day before.

If all these thoughts are kind, positive and loving, then you’re in a good place. But for the majority of us, most of our thoughts are negative and often focus on lack and/or blame of oneself or others.

Affirmations are positive statements designed to interrupt this negative thought pattern. To help start changing some of these negative and possible subconscious thoughts into positive and supportive ones.

They help you take back control by creating awareness as well as planting new thoughts into your daily myriad of mental activities.

Some may say that affirmations are new age nonsense but scientific research backs its validity and everyone from top athletes and performers to CEOs and other leaders are known to use them. And why wouldn’t you – affirmations are free and only require a bit of discipline and fundamental knowledge to implement.

In my talk tomorrow in my Facebook group Happiness Health and Hygge I’ll be sharing some insight into how to use affirmations most effectively and I hope you’ll be able to join me live. There will of course also be a reply and I’ll share additional tips, ideas as well as affirmations during the week.

I will leave you with one of the most powerful quotes that I know about the power of affirmations and that is:

“It’s only a thought and a thought can be changed,” Louise Hay.

All the best
