The 21st of December is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight in the Northern hemisphere. It is a special day that marks a powerful shift in nature of which we are an integrated part and our ancestors knew this and celebrated it for centuries.

The Winter Solstice is a beautiful time to pause and reflect on all the good that we already have in our lives, and for us to practice gratitude. As well as to trust that brighter days will soon be here.

No matter whether you are living in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere – it is a day to connect not only with nature but also our Higher Self, the Universe, call it what you like, and each solstice has its own energy and lessons.

Whether you are already celebrating this special day or not, here are three powerful things you can do to make the most of the Solstice. You may want to add them to your existing practice or consider creating your own traditions incorporating one or all of these in a way that suits you.

1. Release the old to make room for the new

The winter solstice is a key time to look at all the old ‘baggage’ that no longer serves you and consider how you can release it before welcoming in the light that will allow you to grow in the season ahead. Maybe you want to let go of limiting beliefs that prevent you from living your best life – in which case write them all down and consider journaling on the key ones to really uncover what is holding you back. Ask yourself this question: what belief is holding me back from achieving that which I say I want?

You may also want to take this time to let go of physical things that no longer serve you. What are you holding onto out of obligation? Maybe a gift that someone gave you but you never really loved? This can also help you uncover deeper lying beliefs about yourself, that you may want to journal on too.

2. Let go of your resentment

Once you have clarified what limiting beliefs and physical possessions need to go, take a few minutes to consider any resentment you may be holding onto. Are you holding onto things that are out of your control? If so, why? Consider journaling on the following question: How is this resentment serving me? If I let it go, who would I become?

Once you have clarified all that needs to go you may want to consider a ritual to release it all. In my weekly newsletter, shared my personal favorite ritual that is inspired by the traditions of my Viking ancestors. If you would like to receive a copy simply request it here, or feel free to create your own.

3. Tie up loose ends and welcome in the new

Take some time to deal with any unfinished business, whether it is forgiving someone – or even yourself. Are there any other ways you need to make amends? Send that message, write that card, make that call, so you can clear yourself of the loose ends holding you back.

Finally, write down your vision and wishes for the season ahead. Who do you wish to become? What new goals and accomplishments do you want to claim if nothing is holding you back? Write down how you see your new life unfolding in the next 6-12 months. You may want to keep this and then review it at the next Solstice – or release it along with your limiting beliefs as suggested in point 2.

There are many other elements that you could include in your Winter Solstice celebrations and ritual but the above-mentioned are especially powerful to reflect on.

I hope you managed to find the perfect way to incorporate this into your day and life.
