Some days it’s just easier to stay positive than others. It’s when we hit those major bumps in the road, whether that be through other people, external problems or ill health, that we really get tested.
Often we don’t even notice our own negative thinking until it’s already dragged us down, but we can’t really be too upset with our own brain, as it’s only doing its best to keep us safe. Unfortunately, that often involves repeating negative statements and experiences so we won’t go there again.
It is effective – but also means we often get stuck in a negative thought pattern that really doesn’t serve us in the long run.
So how do you re-program yourself? How do you manage to shift out of the negative focus and into a more positive one?
It’s all about upgrading your vibe. Think of it as going from an AB-minor sad song to a happy A-major joyful one. You know how that feels and with good reason because everything around and inside us is vibration.
Moving from a low-vibrational state to a higher one can be done almost instantly. But sometimes we may need to do it more gradually as if we were climbing a high mountain but need to acclimatise ourselves during the process. It’s impossible to go from a feeling of hopelessness to carefree, but you can start moving towards awareness.
Here are 3 of my favourite and highly effective techniques to help get you out of a mental rut almost instantly
Embrace nature:
Whether you go for a walk, sit under a tree or repot your house plants – there is nothing like nature to raise your spirit. Allow yourself to soak up the atmosphere of the wide open skies and the groundedness of trees and plants. If you combine it with physical activity such as walking or working in the garden, then the effect will be even more noticeable and beneficial. Walks in nature are now even being prescribed by health professionals as a way to lift your mood.
Move your body:
You can walk, skip, dance or sing – moving your body also moves your mind. This is one of the key reasons that exercise is known as the best anti-depressant. Dancing is one of my favourite ways to move, but it doesn’t need to be in a formal way – nor does it need to be planned. Let the impulse take you and free your body as well as your mind.
Be the music:
Put on your favourite tune and let it lift you. Countless studies have shown the benefits of music and as music is made of measurable sound waves this makes perfect sense. Singing along will help you create a higher frequency within your body too and is likely to increase your intake of oxygen which also helps to release toxins, tensions and negativity in general. It doesn’t need to be perfect or pretty as long as it feels good and brings a smile to your face.
All of these activities are free and can be combined or spread out over the day. But making the conscious decision to do so is down to you. So can you commit to doing any or all of these today? And then tomorrow and the day after that?
If you can’t leave the house, could you open the windows for 5 minutes and spend some time with your house plants whilst playing your favourite tune?
You may already know intellectually that all this is true but that alone will not make a difference. You will need to actually do it in order to feel the difference and benefits and only you can make the call as to when that will be.
Throughout the week I will share more inspiration as to how to shift out of a negative mindset or physical energy into a more positive one in my Facebook group Happiness Health and Hygge. All the best
